April is Landscape Architecture Month as well as the month we celebrate ecology with Earth Day. It is an appropriate time to celebrate Floura Teeter Landscape Architects’ sustainability initiatives. As landscape architects, we are trained to be stewards of the planet. That translates beyond our daily work creating ecologically healthy communities to our partnerships with architects, engineers, and our clients as well as the way we live and work.
Some highlights of FTLA’s celebration of sustainability include:
Our recent accomplishment of having 100% of our technical staff LEED accredited. We encourage LEED accreditation because we feel it makes us better collaborators on design teams. Understanding the full scope of LEED and sustainability enables us to consider the big picture and integrate our work into our projects seamlessly and sustainably.
Our work environment also demonstrates sustainable principles. Our office was designed utilizing the Baltimore City Green Building Standard and features motion sensors, programmable thermostats, operable windows as well as natural daylight and views to the inspiring Washington Monument and historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. We also have a robust recycling program and encourage waste reduction in our office operations.
In April we drill down to take a hard look at our consumption and waste with Zero Waste April. We spend this month analyzing what we throw away and why and how we can permanently reduce our waste footprint. We set metrics to reduce our waste with the ultimate goal, in the last week of April, to reach zero waste. While this is a challenge, to be sure, we are more than up for the task. Stay tuned to our social media channels for updates on our progress and to learn more about the tactics we employ to reach zero waste.
Our office is centrally located to many of our clients and the agencies we work with located in the City. This allows us to walk or take public transportation to many of our meetings. We enjoy being part of the Mount Vernon neighborhood and taking advantage of all it has to offer.
Our focus on sustainability extends to contributing to our local communities through our corporate efforts such as Community Grows Here and our participation in PARK(ing) Days and Green Apple Days of Service. We donate our time to schools, non-profits and other community groups to improve our City. Many of our staff volunteer in the community on their own time as well. We applaud and value this commitment to making our world a better place.
The most important feature of our approach to sustainability is our thought process and the way we approach our work. We look at all of the features of an existing site and the surrounding ecosystem and work with our clients and partners to deliver solutions that provide beauty and ecology while enhancing the communities where we work.
Sustainability is more than just a buzz word at Floura Teeter. It is at the heart of everything we do from the designs we create to the environment we work in. Visit our office to learn more about our sustainability initiatives and how we contribute to protecting our environment and the communities in which we live, work and play.
