Renovations to this 1970’s era office and retail complex in Crystal City, Virginia included a much-needed streetscape renovation. The two-story plinth of the office towers originally provided pedestrian access to the buildings with service functions at the street level below. Architectural improvements included new lobbies within that previous service area, and Floura Teeter was brought on to enhance the new entrances with a vibrant streetscape.
Located over structured parking with weight and depth constraints, design of the streetscape presented a number of challenges. Sculpted, crystalline-shaped planters provide the necessary depth for street trees while also incorporating seat walls for relaxation, lunch, and break times. Again expressing the “Crystal” City motif, the crystalline-shaped planters extend into the streetscape’s walkway, with decorative paving patterns that fragment into smaller and smaller crystals. Additional updates included lighting, bicycle parking, crosswalks, and site furnishings.
