Within the City of Gaithersburg, this 9-acre property is located within the established neighborhood of Washingtonian Woods, and is entirely surrounded by single-family homes. Acquired through the federal lands to parks program, the parcel must be developed and maintained as a public park.
Floura Teeter developed a Master Plan for the park. An ad hoc committee was selected by the City of Gaithersburg (COG) to guide the process and provide feedback on the concepts. The design team and the committee met on a bi-weekly basis to explore the vision for the park, incorporate the overall programming needs of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department, and develop layout plans. This process was integral to the production of a consensus plan.
The final plan re-purposes the existing warehouse building into a multi-purpose recreation center that includes a gym, classrooms, and dance studio. The park features an open lawn area for spontaneous activities, walking and biking trails that include fitness stations, a small bike track, ½ court basketball, community gardens, traditional and nature play areas, picnic areas, and small amphitheater. The design focuses on creating a four-season park that attracts multiple generations and is connected and accessible to the wider community.
