Located in Frederick County, Route 144 is part of the historic district of New Market and follows the alignment of the National Pike. Floura Teeter was responsible for the design of a $6 million streetscape rehabilitation, working closely with the community to create a sense of place for not only residents but also for visiting tourists. Accomplishing the much-needed upgrades within the historic neighborhood context was the principal design goal of the streetscape improvements. Floura Teeter’s scope of work included streetscape design, ADA compliance, enhancing pedestrian safety, and construction administration.
The proposed ADA accessible sidewalks use brick that is consistent with the color of the existing brick found in town in order to maintain the historic character along Main Street. The walkway in key areas will be edged with existing bluestone found throughout the town. The landscape planting includes a combination of shade and ornamental trees, shrubs, and drought tolerant groundcover that can thrive in this urban environment.
