Located in Frederick County, Maryland Route 144 passes through the New Market Historic District. Floura Teeter provided landscape architectural design and arboricultural services for this streetscape rehabilitation. Working closely with community leaders, the Maryland Historic Trust (MHT), and a multi-disciplinary design team, the goal was to create safe and accessible pedestrian circulation for residents and tourists alike while preserving the town’s historic character.
Identified as a Community and Safety Enhancement Project and located within the National Register of Historic Places, historic preservation, and respect for the town’s existing conditions was of the utmost importance and one of the most difficult design challenges. A collaborative partnering effort between design team members, stakeholders, contractors, and preservation officers delivered solutions that sourced new materials and incorporated salvaged elements, creating an ADA compliant and historically accurate pedestrian corridor. Planting design incorporated a greater than 1:1 tree mitigation ratio, raised planters to separate the road from the bifurcated sidewalk, and removal of non-native/invasive species.
