The University Union is located in the heart of campus; it occupies an important place along the central pedestrian spine and is adjacent to the principal University entrance.
New entrances on all four sides of the Union building incorporate important connections to adjacent campus circulation. Each new plaza space has its own character and scale, appropriate to the adjacencies of each area. These include large open spaces for programmed activities, but also for dining, collaboration and individual study. The new site design creates vantage points for watching activities on the adjacent rec field and includes expanded paving at the bookstore for small sidewalk sale events, and student gathering.
Significant challenges associated with renovating and expanding a building of this size within a limited site were evident – existing utilities were everywhere, stormwater requirements absorbed valuable open space, and improvements to existing roof decks were limited to surface treatments.
This $80 million renovation and expansion of the Union successfully incorporates elements of the existing campus character, is consistent with Master Plan goals, and provides engaging new amenities for students.
